Regular adjustment of supply to demand

Schedule management

Gradual and regular opening of the schedule

Advanced access recommends operating with an open “accordion” schedule over a two to four week period. This means opening a new week of availabilities at the beginning of each week, so that there is a minimum of two weeks open for appointments at all times.

An open schedule for a limited period of two or four weeks has many advantages, the most important being a reduction in missed appointments. In addition, it creates a more flexible schedule to accommodate vacation time or professional activities.

Referral algorithm

A referral algorithm is a tool that allows administrative staff to prioritize certain types of appointments and refer patients to the appropriate professional or to external services as needed. Here is an example of a referral algorithm that could be adapted to your clinical context.
